Rocky Hill War Memorial

Rocky Hill War Memorial stands on a basalt outcrop north of the city centre, a solid stone tower commemorating Goulburn district men who served in the First World War. The tower is climbable and gives the best views in Goulburn — across the city, over the pastoral country of the Southern Tablelands, and on a clear day toward the distant Blue Mountains to the northeast.

The memorial and surrounding park is a peaceful spot and worth the short drive from the city centre. The approach passes through modest residential streets typical of a 1920s Australian country town. The inscribed names on the memorial make sobering reading for a city of Goulburn's modest size — the losses of the First World War hit small inland towns particularly hard.

A story
Rocky Hill was one of the first war memorials in Australia to incorporate a dedicated observation tower as a practical feature alongside its commemorative function. The tower was opened in 1925 and has given generations of Goulburn residents a vantage point that the flat city centre otherwise entirely lacks.
