Leeton's Art Deco walk is the simplest way to see why the town is worth more than a fuel stop. The centre has dozens of interwar buildings, from shopfronts and civic offices to the old Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission building and the water towers tied to Walter Burley Griffin's plan.
The details are small but rewarding: chevrons, curved parapets, pressed metal, tiled entries, and the proud symmetry of a town that grew with irrigation money between the wars. It is best done slowly, with the Roxy Theatre as the obvious landmark.
