Tennant Creek Telegraph Station

Stone telegraph station from the Overland Telegraph Line, north of the modern town.

The Tennant Creek Telegraph Station was built in 1872 as part of the Overland Telegraph Line, the wire that linked Australia to the rest of the world. Its stone buildings stand beside the old route north of town, with enough space and silence around them to make the isolation easy to imagine.

Gold found nearby by a linesman in 1925 helped create the present town. That makes the station more than a relic: it is the point where communication, travel, and mining all met in this part of the Territory.
