Big Mango

The Big Mango is a ten-metre roadside monument outside the visitor centre, and it is exactly as silly as it sounds. Bowen can get away with it because mangoes are part of the town's identity: the Kensington Pride mango was first grown commercially here, and the district still sends fruit around Australia.

Stop for the photo, get local advice at the visitor centre, then keep going into town. The mango is the joke; Bowen's beaches are the reason to stay longer.

A story
In 2014 the seven-tonne Big Mango briefly disappeared, causing national headlines before it emerged as a publicity stunt. It was a ridiculous episode, but also proof that Australians take their roadside giants seriously.
