Bowen

Old North Queensland port town with quiet beaches, mango history, and Whitsunday views.

Bowen is the older, quieter face of the Whitsundays: a North Queensland port town with wide streets, mango farms, beaches on several sides, and none of Airlie Beach's sailing-town bustle. It was founded in 1861 and once had ambitions to be the capital of North Queensland. That did not happen, but the leftover scale gives the town a strangely spacious feel.

The case for stopping is simple. Horseshoe Bay is a lovely little beach with granite headlands and reef close to shore; Flagstaff Hill and the Cape Edgecumbe lookouts give broad views over the coast; the murals and Catalina memorial put some local history into a walk around town. The Big Mango is pure roadside kitsch, but here it fits because Bowen really is mango country.

Bowen is not a substitute for the Whitsunday islands. It is a good spare-day detour if you are driving the Bruce Highway or want a coastal town that still feels local after the tour boats have gone elsewhere.
