Caloundra Lighthouses

Two lighthouses stand side by side at Canberra Terrace, on the headland above Kings Beach. The Old Caloundra Light, built in 1896, is a modest timber-framed structure that is among the oldest remaining lighthouses in Queensland. The newer tower was added in 1968 to handle the growing volume of shipping through the Pumicestone Passage.

The headland setting gives good views over the passage toward Bribie Island and south along the beach. It is a five-minute walk from Kings Beach, and worth the detour for anyone interested in maritime history.

A story
The Old Caloundra Light was built in 1896 to guide ships into the passage between the mainland and Bribie Island. It is the oldest lighthouse in Queensland still standing in its original position. The New Caloundra Light was added in 1968 when increased shipping traffic demanded a more powerful signal. For a decade the two lighthouses operated together — one guiding from the original position, the other from a taller new tower nearby — a rare arrangement that has been preserved at the site.
