When to Go

The wet season (November to April) brings heavy rain, high humidity, and the risk of cyclones. The Thorsborne Trail is effectively closed during this period — creeks flood, tracks deteriorate, and the heat combined with rain makes the experience genuinely unpleasant. Some roads in the forest close completely after major rainfall.

The dry season (May to October) is the time to visit. Temperatures are warm but manageable, rainfall is minimal, and the trails and swimming holes are at their best. The Thorsborne Trail permits fill up fastest for June to August — book months in advance.

Cyclone season runs from November to April and Cardwell has been directly hit by severe cyclones in the past; Cyclone Yasi (2011) caused significant damage to the town and foreshore. Check forecasts if visiting in the transitional months.
