The Stock Exchange Arcade is where Charters Towers' gold money became speculation. Built in 1888 as the Royal Arcade, it became the town's stock exchange in 1890, when mining shares and reef reports mattered enormously.
Look for the glazed roof, tiled floor, shopfronts, and the odd grandeur of a financial building in a hot inland town. It says more about the boom than a long list of dates ever could.
