Charters Towers is an inland Queensland town with a better story than its size suggests. In the late 19th century it was one of the richest gold towns in Australia, grand enough to call itself "The World" and to run a stock exchange far from any capital city.
That boom left real things to see. Venus Gold Battery is one of Queensland's great surviving gold-processing sites. The Stock Exchange Arcade still carries the confidence and speculation of the rush years, while Towers Hill ties the story back to the gold discovery, wartime bunkers, and a broad dry-country view.
Charters Towers works best as a heritage stop from Townsville or on a longer inland Queensland drive. Give it a full day if you want to tour the battery properly and walk the old centre without rushing.
