Every second year, Chinchilla turns its melon industry into a street party. The festival is famous for melon skiing, melon bungee, pip spitting, eating contests, farm tours, markets, and a parade through town.
It is silly in the best possible way, and it gives the town a reason to be on a Queensland road-trip itinerary rather than just on the map. Check dates before planning around it; the event is usually in February and does not run every year.
