Chinchilla sits on the Warrego Highway in the Western Downs, about 300 km northwest of Brisbane. From the road it can look like a fuel stop, but the town has a sharper identity than that: melons, petrified wood, cypress pine country, and one of Queensland's odder agricultural stories.
The local claim to fame is the Chinchilla Red petrified wood found around the district. The Chinchilla Historical Museum is the best first stop, with a large petrified wood collection, restored local buildings, machinery, and timber-industry displays. East of town, Boonarga Cactoblastis Memorial Hall commemorates the moth that helped defeat the prickly pear plague.
Chinchilla is also Australia's self-declared melon capital. The Chinchilla Melon Festival, held every second year, turns that into a messy town-wide party of melon skiing, eating contests, farm tours, markets, and street events. Outside festival time, Charley's Creek and Chinchilla Weir make the town a pleasant overnight stop rather than just a place to buy petrol.
