Chinaman Creek Dam is a simple but welcome thing in this country: water, shade, birds, and a break from red dust. It is only a short drive from town, so it works well late in the day when the light softens and the heat starts to drop.
Kayaks and paddleboards sometimes appear on the water, but you do not need a plan. A quiet walk, a picnic, or a slow look at the shoreline is enough.
