Cloncurry is a working outback town on the long road between Longreach and Mount Isa. Copper put it on the map, but its travel interest comes from a wider north-west Queensland story: mining, aviation, remote medicine, and the stubborn logistics of living a long way from the coast.
The town claims, with some justice, that Qantas was conceived here. More importantly for visitors, the Royal Flying Doctor Service began in Cloncurry, and John Flynn Place Museum tells that story well. Cloncurry Unearthed adds the mining and mineral side.
Cloncurry is not pretty in the soft sense. It is hot, dry, spread out, and practical. But if you are crossing the north-west, it is a real stop rather than a fuel-and-go place, with enough history and outback landscape to justify a spare day.
