The Robbers Tree marks the place where Joseph Wells hid after the 1880 armed robbery of the Queensland National Bank in Cunnamulla. Townspeople and dogs tracked him to the tree, where he was eventually coaxed down and captured.
The original tree was damaged by lightning, so this is now more memorial than living relic. Even so, the story is pure outback theatre and gives a sharp little edge to a walk around the southern end of town.
