Cunnamulla

South-west Queensland outback town on the Warrego River, wrapped in stockman folklore.

Cunnamulla sits on the Warrego River in far south-west Queensland, a long way from the coast and just as far from any need to impress. It is a working outback town first, but it has more character than many highway stops: a Slim Dusty song, a bronze stockman, a famous robber's tree, artesian-water stories, and river country that changes mood with the rain.

The Cunnamulla Fella Centre is the natural first stop. It folds the visitor centre, local museum, art gallery, and Artesian Time Tunnel into one place, and gives context for the pastoral country around town. Nearby, the Robbers Tree keeps alive one of Queensland's oddest bushranger-era stories.

Cunnamulla is not a polished destination, and that is part of the appeal. Come if you are already travelling the Adventure Way or Mitchell Highway and want a day that feels like the outback rather than a service stop: river walks, murals, big skies, and a town that has made a small legend out of its distance.
