Beaches

The Gold Coast's subtropical climate and near-constant sunshine make it one of Australia's best beach destinations. The coastline runs from the quiet bays around Coolangatta in the south to the bustling high-rise strip at Surfers Paradise and beyond.

Rainbow Bay in Coolangatta is protected from the prevailing trade winds, making it popular with both surfers and swimmers. The town is just five minutes from the airport and has a relaxed feel. The headland walks in this area offer spectacular coastal views.

Burleigh Heads is a rainforest headland jutting into the Pacific that has been a famous surfing spot since the 1960s. The point break is world-class, and the adjacent national park has a short but beautiful rainforest walk. Good cafes and restaurants overlook the break.

Surfers Paradise is the tourist hub — high-rises, nightlife, and crowds. Locals tend to avoid it in peak season, but the beach itself is long enough to absorb the numbers, and it remains one of Australia's premier nightlife strips.
