Rainbow Bay

Protected bay near the state border with calm water and views of Snapper Rocks

Rainbow Bay sits at the very southern tip of Queensland, tucked behind the headland at Greenmount Point and within walking distance of the New South Wales border. The bay is protected from the prevailing south-easterly swell that powers the surf breaks around the headland, which makes it one of the calmest and most consistent swimming spots on the entire Gold Coast.

The beach is crescent-shaped and relatively narrow at high tide, with a grassy park immediately behind it — families with young children find it ideal precisely because the water is gentle and the facilities nearby. The headland walk from Rainbow Bay to Coolangatta through Greenmount is short but rewarding, passing above Snapper Rocks and giving clear views of the famous surf break below and the coast stretching north. In winter, humpback whales pass close to this headland on their migration.

The area around Rainbow Bay has an authentic community feel absent from the tourist commercial strip to the north. Surf shops, small cafes, and an ice cream shop at the bay are about as commercial as it gets. Local surfers dominate the Snapper Rocks lineup, and the contrast between the calm bay and the powerful waves around the point — sometimes just 100 metres apart — makes the geography interesting.
