Mission Beach Walk

The Mission Beach walk is a 14-kilometer coastal track that connects South Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach, and Mission Beach village through a corridor of coastal scrub, rainforest edge, and open beach. The track is flat and well-maintained, and can be walked in either direction in about four hours at a comfortable pace.

The walk passes through cassowary habitat, crosses a number of creek mouths that may require wading at high tide, and offers periodic views across to Dunk Island offshore. Most people walk the full length one way and arrange a lift or take the local bus back — there is no point doing it as a return trip when the scenery is better seen once in good light than twice in mixed conditions.

A story
The walk passes through the Hull River National Park, which covers the site of the Hull River Aboriginal Mission — a settlement established in 1914 for displaced Aboriginal communities from across North Queensland. It was destroyed by a cyclone in 1918, killing all but two of the 84 residents. The site has been largely reclaimed by forest, and the memorial markers are easy to miss if you don't know to look for them.
