Green Hill Fort

Green Hill Fort was built in the 1890s, when the Australian colonies worried about Russian naval power and the strategic value of the Torres Strait. The guns, magazines, and tunnels now feel slightly improbable on such a small island, which makes the place memorable.

The fort is also one of the best viewpoints on Thursday Island, looking over the harbour, neighbouring islands, and the channels that made the strait so important.
