Thursday Island

Torres Strait island town with Kaurareg country, pearling history, and colonial defences.

Thursday Island, or Waiben, is the main settlement and administrative centre of the Torres Strait Islands. It is small, hot, and practical, but it has a sharper identity than many tropical transit points: Kaurareg country, Torres Strait Islander culture, pearling history, and the old colonial fear of invasion all meet on one compact island.

The best visit is simple. Start with Gab Titui Cultural Centre, then go up to Green Hill Fort for the view and military history. The Thursday Island Cemetery is sobering, with graves that point to the multi-ethnic pearling and trading world that built the island's modern town.

Do not come expecting a resort island. Thursday Island is better as a cultural and historical stop, especially if you are already moving through Cape York or the Torres Strait.
