Loveday Internment Collection

Visitor-centre display on one of Australia's largest World War II internment camp systems.

The Loveday Internment Collection is housed at the Barmera Visitor Information Centre and covers the camps that operated nearby during World War II. Loveday held civilian internees and prisoners of war, including people of German, Italian, and Japanese background, and at its peak was one of the largest such camp systems in Australia.

It is a sober stop, and a useful correction to the Riverland's easy holiday mood. The surrounding landscape looks ordinary now, which makes the display more important: without it, you could drive past the old camp area and miss the story entirely.
