Algebuckina Bridge is the strongest sight on this stretch of the Oodnadatta Track. Built for the old Ghan railway in the 1890s, it carries a long run of iron spans across the Neales River floodplain, where a low crossing would have been washed out again and again.
The bridge is impressive partly because it is so remote. There is little around it except desert, riverbed, and the remains of the old railway, which makes the scale of the work feel almost stubborn. Stay off the bridge itself and view it from the safe ground below.
