Oodnadatta

Remote South Australian outback town where the old Ghan, Arabana country, and the pink roadhouse meet.

Oodnadatta is a tiny town on the Oodnadatta Track, a long way from almost everywhere and all the better for it. It was once an important stop on the old Ghan railway and on older outback routes; today it is a roadhouse, museum, Aboriginal community, and practical pause in a huge desert landscape.

The town's identity is stronger than its size. The Pink Roadhouse is both service station and outback landmark, while the Railway Tjukurpa Museum gives the old railway story a local home. South of town, Algebuckina Bridge is the kind of lonely engineering relic that makes the track memorable.

Oodnadatta is not a casual detour from Adelaide. Roads are unsealed, rain changes everything, and distances are serious. If you are already on the track, though, it is more than a fuel stop: it is one of the places where the route's railway, pastoral, Arabana, and road-trip stories come together.
