Hart's Mill

Hart's Mill is a stone flour mill built in 1842, standing at the inner harbour's edge as one of the oldest surviving industrial buildings in South Australia. The tower has been restored and is occasionally open for events and exhibitions; at other times it forms the backdrop to the Fishermen's Wharf area and the dolphin cruise departure point.

The mill is a reminder that Port Adelaide's heritage predates the gold rush era and the great wool and wheat industries — the earliest settlers needed flour before almost anything else, and the mill served the colony for decades. The surrounding precinct has been developed with interpretive panels explaining the history of the wharf area. The water's edge here is a good spot to wait for dolphins in the early morning.

A story
Hart's Mill, built in 1842, was the first steam-powered flour mill in South Australia and a vital piece of colonial infrastructure — flour milled here fed the early settlers while crop yields from Adelaide's farms were still unreliable. The tower is the oldest surviving industrial building in the state.
