Rosetta Head (The Bluff)

Rosetta Head — known almost universally as The Bluff — is the prominent headland 4 km south-west of Victor Harbor town centre, rising about 100 metres above Encounter Bay. It marks the western boundary of the bay and provides the best land-based whale-watching position in South Australia, with views along the full sweep of the bay from the elevated lookout at the summit.

The walk to the top from the car park at the base takes about 20 minutes. The lookout has benches, information panels about the southern right whale population, and uninterrupted views across to Granite Island and the Victor Harbor foreshore. Between June and October, whales are visible from here most days — often with calves, since the bay is a calving ground. Binoculars help, but the whales frequently come close enough to be seen with the naked eye. The South Australian Whale Centre in town has real-time sighting reports.
