Apsley Gorge is one of the main natural sights in Douglas-Apsley National Park, inland from Bicheno. The gorge cuts through dry east-coast country and gives the park a wilder feel than the beaches and coastal viewpoints nearby.
It is best for walkers who want a nature stop beyond Bicheno's blowhole and coast. Check conditions before setting out, since river levels and heat can change the difficulty quickly.
