Willow Court

Former asylum precinct now mixing heavy Tasmanian history with antiques and restored buildings.

Willow Court is New Norfolk's most memorable place, and not always a comfortable one. The precinct grew out of the New Norfolk Asylum, founded in the 1820s, and later became part of the Royal Derwent Hospital, one of Australia's longest-running mental-health institutions.

Today the site is being slowly reused, with restored buildings, antiques, food, and guided history tours sharing space with derelict corners and difficult memory. Walk the Avenue to the old barracks and give it time. It is not a neat museum, but that is part of why it stays with you.
