The Big Penguin

A three-metre concrete fairy penguin standing on the foreshore in the middle of town — earnest, slightly absurd, and the obvious photo stop for anyone driving Tasmania's north coast. The statue faces Bass Strait with the actual ocean a few metres behind.

The promenade either side is a pleasant five-minute walk in either direction, with benches, sculptures of smaller penguins set into the path, and views across to the water. The Big Penguin itself is free, always accessible, and reliably outfitted with whatever costume the local committee has settled on this season.

A story
Three metres tall, made of concrete over a steel frame, and erected in 1975 to mark the town's centenary, the Big Penguin is one of Australia's oldest "big things" — a national tradition of oversized roadside attractions that includes the Big Banana, Big Lobster, and Big Merino. Locals occasionally dress it for Christmas, Easter, and Mardi Gras; the scarf in winter is a recurring sight.
