Dial Range and Mount Montgomery

A low forested range immediately south of Penguin, rising to about 460 metres at Mount Montgomery. The protected pockets — Mount Montgomery State Reserve and the larger Ferndene State Reserve a few kilometres further south — preserve cool-temperate rainforest of myrtle beech, sassafras, and fern with a network of walking tracks ranging from twenty-minute strolls to half-day loops.

The Mount Montgomery summit walk is the obvious target: about 90 minutes return from the carpark on Pine Road, mostly through eucalypt forest, with a final clamber over rocks to a view east to Devonport and west across the Bass Strait coast. Wear proper shoes; the upper section can be slippery after rain. Trailheads are signposted south of town off the Bass Highway.
