Sovereign Hill

Living-history recreation of an 1850s gold-rush township — Ballarat's flagship attraction

Address Bradshaw Street, Golden Point

Sovereign Hill is the closest thing Australia has to Colonial Williamsburg — a 25-hectare recreation of an 1850s Ballarat goldfield, with a working mine you can descend into, a panning stream where you can keep what you find, a Main Street of shops staffed by costumed interpreters, a coach and horses, a Chinese village, and a working tent encampment.

Plan a full day. Highlights include the underground mine tour (book separately on arrival), gold pouring demonstrations several times a day, and the live-actor "Eureka" recreation. The evening show Aura (separate ticket) is an hour-long outdoor sound-and-light retelling of the rebellion. Sturdy shoes, hat, sunscreen.

A story
When the alluvial gold was worked out at Ballarat, the diggings became a wasteland of mullock heaps and abandoned shafts. The land was officially reserved in 1939 to preserve what remained; Sovereign Hill opened in 1970 on the original Red Hill goldfield and rapidly became one of the most-visited regional museums in Australia.
