Castlemaine Botanical Gardens

Nineteenth-century public gardens with an ornamental lake, old trees, and wide lawns.

Castlemaine Botanical Gardens give the town its easiest breathing space. The lake, lawns, and mature exotic and native trees make it a good picnic stop, especially after a morning of galleries and heritage buildings.

The gardens were laid out in the 19th century, when goldfields towns liked their public spaces to prove they were permanent. They still do that job well: calm, green, and more generous than you expect from a town this size.
