Castlemaine

Goldfields town where Victorian mining streets now carry one of regional Victoria's strongest arts scenes.

Castlemaine is a central Victorian goldfields town with a better second act than most. The 1850s rush left it with broad streets, public buildings, old pubs, and a handsome railway station; the last few decades have filled those bones with artists, makers, good cafes, and weekend visitors from Melbourne.

The town is not as grand as Bendigo or Ballarat, but it is easier to enjoy on foot. Castlemaine Art Museum is the cultural anchor, with a serious Australian collection in an Art Deco building. Buda Historic Home and Garden gives the goldfields domestic story more texture than another mine shaft would.

Castlemaine works best as a slow day: start with art, walk the old centre, sit in the Botanical Gardens, then nose around The Mill or the market if your timing is right. It is a good stop on the Bendigo line and a fine base for Maldon, Chewton, and the dry goldfields country around Mount Alexander.
