The Welcome Stranger Monument marks the area near Moliagul where prospectors John Deason and Richard Oates found the world's largest known alluvial gold nugget in 1869. The nugget weighed more than 70 kg and was reportedly just below the surface, a discovery so oversized that it still sounds invented.
The monument itself is simple, but the story is strong enough to carry the detour. It works best when combined with Dunolly Museum back in town.
