Australia and Pacific > Australia > Victoria > Dunolly
Dunolly is a small town in Victoria's Goldfields, north of Maryborough and west of Bendigo. It is not as polished as Maldon or as grand as Ballarat, but it has one great claim: the Welcome Stranger, the largest alluvial gold nugget ever recorded, was found at nearby Moliagul in 1869.
That gold story still gives the town its shape. Broadway keeps several old public buildings, including the Dunolly Court House, while the Dunolly Museum collects nugget replicas, mining relics, photographs, and family history. The Welcome Stranger Monument is out at Moliagul, in quiet country that makes the scale of the discovery feel even stranger.
Dunolly just clears the bar as a Goldfields day stop, not as a major destination. Come if you are already in the region and want a more modest, less curated gold town with one extraordinary story at its centre.
