Red Gum Forest Cycling

The river flats around Echuca are threaded with cycling tracks through stands of river red gum — massive, silver-barked eucalypts that grow only in the floodplains of the Murray-Darling system and can live for a thousand years. The riding is flat, the tracks are well-maintained, and there are enough loops of varying length (from 10 kilometres to over 40) to fill a day or spread across two.

The Wharparilla Flora Reserve, a few kilometres west of town, is a good destination for a shorter ride and reliably produces sightings of grey kangaroos in the early morning. Bikes are available for hire from several shops near the wharf. The trails connect Echuca to Moama on the New South Wales side, making it easy to cross the Murray and return on the other bank.
