Twelve Apostles

Famous limestone sea stacks east of Port Campbell, best at low sun.

The Twelve Apostles are the headline sight of the Shipwreck Coast: limestone stacks cut from the cliffs by waves, wind, and time. They are busy for good reason. Even after years of tourism campaigns, the view still has power.

Go early or late if you can. Midday is when the platforms feel most crowded and the rock least dramatic; sunrise and sunset bring out the gold in the limestone and make the sea stacks feel less like a postcard.

A story
The name is better marketing than counting. The formations were once known as the Sow and Piglets, and erosion has kept changing the number of visible stacks anyway.
