Sale Swing Bridge

1883 iron swing bridge built to let river traffic pass between Sale and the Gippsland Lakes.

Sale Swing Bridge stands 5 km south of town, where the Latrobe and Thomson rivers meet. Built in 1883, it was the first movable bridge in Victoria and could rotate to let boats pass along the waterway to Sale.

It is a modest sight, but a good one if you like old engineering. The bridge makes the canal story physical: Sale's inland port only made sense because vessels could still move through this bend in the river.
