Goulburn River & Wetlands

The Goulburn River runs along the western edge of Shepparton, and the floodplain wetlands around it are the best natural asset in the region. The Kialla Lakes and the wetlands south of the city are excellent for birdwatching — herons, ibis, cormorants, ducks, and more exotic species use the area heavily during migration.

Cycling and walking tracks follow the river corridor. The Goulburn Valley Rail Trail runs nearby if you want to cover more ground. Early morning is the best time for birds; in summer the river also offers swimming at a few accessible spots. After rain the wetlands expand dramatically and the birdlife intensifies.
