SPC Food Heritage

SPC is woven into the identity of Shepparton — this is where the "Food Capital of Australia" claim actually comes from. The company has been canning fruit, tomatoes, and vegetables from the Goulburn Valley since 1918, and the factory on Boundary Road is still operating.

The SPC brand centre and visitor experience explains the history of the company and the region's fruit-growing industry. You can buy products directly. It's not the most thrilling attraction, but for anyone interested in Australian agricultural and industrial history — or who grew up eating SPC peaches — there's genuine interest here. The orchards surrounding Shepparton are at their most photogenic during blossom season in spring.

A story
SPC — originally Shepparton Preserving Company — was founded in 1918 when local fruit growers decided to process their own surplus rather than watch it rot. The company grew to become one of Australia's largest food manufacturers. When Coca-Cola threatened to close the plant in 2014, the Victorian government's refusal to bail it out made national news; a local management buyout eventually saved it.
