High Street

High Street is the heart of Yackandandah and the reason most visitors come. The row of weatherboard shopfronts, each with its deep veranda shade and irregular facade, has survived more than 150 years with minimal intervention. A slow walk from one end to the other takes fifteen minutes, or several hours if you stop in all the antique shops.

The buildings are in active use as shops, a bakery, a gallery, and a handful of small cafes. The variety of what's inside them — from vintage cameras to handmade quilts to locally produced jam — reflects the town's creative community. The street also has several heritage-listed buildings with interpretive plaques explaining their role in the gold rush era.

A story
Yackandandah's High Street is one of the best-preserved gold rush streetscapes in Victoria. Most of the buildings date from the 1860s and 1870s and have never been significantly altered — not because of deliberate heritage protection, but because the town was too small and too poor to afford to change them. The result is an accidental museum of Victorian commercial architecture, with the original wide verandahs and post-and-rail construction intact.
