Yea Flora Fossil Site

The Yea Flora Fossil Site is a roadside cutting on Limestone Road, just east of town, where Miocene-era plant fossils are visible in the exposed rock face. The fossils are around 5 million years old and preserve the impressions of leaves, seeds, and fragments of a subtropical forest that once covered this part of Victoria when the climate was warmer. The site is registered on the Victorian Heritage Register.

This is a minor stop — there is no infrastructure, no interpretation, and the fossils are small and require knowing what you're looking at. For anyone with a passing interest in palaeobotany or just in the idea that this now-temperate corner of Victoria was once subtropical forest, it is a short detour worth making. The site is accessible from the main road on foot.
