Yea

Quiet Victorian country town in Great Dividing Range foothills, with wetlands and pastoral Murrindindi scenery.

A quiet country town about two hours northeast of Melbourne, Yea sits at the junction of the Melba and Goulburn Valley highways in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range. The surrounding Murrindindi Shire is pastoral countryside — green rolling hills, cattle farms, and stands of eucalyptus — and the town serves as a natural rest stop for travelers heading to the ski fields or the Victorian High Country.

The Yea River runs through the edge of town and offers decent trout fishing, particularly in the cooler months. The Yea Wetlands, a well-maintained boardwalk reserve on the river flats, is a good spot for birdwatching and a stretch of the legs after the drive from Melbourne. The town's main street has a handful of cafes and a bakery that does solid country pies — the kind of place where you stop for 20 minutes and end up staying for an hour.

The area was badly affected by the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, which devastated nearby Marysville and Kinglake. The regrown forests are now lush and accessible, and the drive from Yea to Marysville through the Black Spur is one of Victoria's most beautiful stretches of road, winding through towering mountain ash forest.
