Dolphin Discovery Centre

The Dolphin Discovery Centre on Koombana Bay foreshore is built around a genuinely wild dolphin colony. Up to 90 bottlenose dolphins use the bay as their home range, and they regularly come into the shallows in the morning to interact with people standing in the water. The experience is unscripted — no feeding, no corralling — which makes it one of the more authentic wildlife encounters in Western Australia.

The centre provides information about the resident dolphins (many of which have been individually named and tracked over years), runs guided wade experiences in the morning shallows, and offers dolphin-watching boat cruises out into Koombana Bay. The cruises typically have higher encounter rates than simply waiting on the beach, though early morning beach encounters in calm conditions can be extraordinary.

The beach beside the centre is also a pleasant place to sit in the evening, watching the sun go down over the estuary.

A story
The dolphins that visit Koombana Bay are wild and come and go freely. The colony of up to 90 bottlenose dolphins has been using the bay for decades, and on the right morning — usually when the sea is calm and the dolphins are foraging near shore — you can wade into knee-deep water and find yourself surrounded.
