South Beach

South Beach is the long swimming beach a kilometre south of central Fremantle, the suburb's family beach and the daily after-work swim for many locals. The Indian Ocean here is open, the sand is pale and fine, and the protected bay between the South Mole and the breakwater means the water is usually calm.

A grass park behind the beach has barbecues, playgrounds, change rooms, and a kiosk. The view back to the harbour cranes and the city skyline is unusual — most Perth beaches face open ocean — and the sunsets are remarkable. The Bather's Beach to South Beach walk takes about twenty minutes one way and is one of the better short city walks.
