St Patrick's Basilica

St Patrick's Basilica, on Adelaide Street, is the principal Catholic church of Fremantle and a landmark of the Cappuccino Strip end of town. The current building dates from 1900, in a French Gothic style with twin spires and a rose window above the western entrance.

The interior is unexpectedly fine — wide nave, plain limestone walls, and a generous run of stained glass that catches the Indian Ocean light. Patrick of Ireland is the patron saint of the strongly Irish Catholic congregation that built early Fremantle, and the parish was the first founded outside the eastern colonies. Visitors are welcome outside service times.
