The Boab Prison Tree south of Wyndham is a huge hollow boab, long associated with the old police and stock routes through the district. Unlike some prison-tree stories elsewhere in northern Australia, this one is locally recorded as having been used as an overnight lock-up.
The tree is impressive even before the history is added: thick, old, and strange in the way Kimberley boabs often are. Visit with respect, and do not climb into or damage the hollow trunk.
