Wyndham

Far-northern Kimberley port town below the Bastion Range and the Five Rivers Lookout.

Wyndham feels like the end of a very long road, which in a practical sense it is. This small Kimberley port sits near the mouths of five rivers, below the Bastion Range, with mudflats, mangroves, boab trees, crocodile warnings, and a history tied to gold rush supply lines and cattle.

The town is not pretty in the easy coastal sense, but it has a strong frontier identity. Five Rivers Lookout gives the big view: the Ord, Forrest, King, Durack, and Pentecost rivers draining toward Cambridge Gulf. In town, the Afghan Cemetery is a small but moving reminder of the cameleers who helped open the inland routes.

The best sights need wheels and dry-season timing. The Boab Prison Tree and The Grotto make a good short circuit south of town. Wyndham is not a place to drift through carelessly: carry water, respect crocodile signs, and treat unsealed roads as weather-dependent.
