Gwalia is the reason to stop in Leonora. The old mining settlement was largely abandoned after the Sons of Gwalia mine closed in 1963, leaving cottages, workshops, machinery, and red-dirt streets on the slope above the open cut.
It feels less staged than many heritage villages. Walk slowly and look into the small houses; the power of the place is in how ordinary the rooms are, and how quickly a working town became an exhibit.
