Leonora is a small, hard-edged goldfields town north of Kalgoorlie, kept alive by mining, distance, and the long memory of the rush. The town itself is spare, but the nearby settlement of Gwalia gives it a reason to stop rather than just refuel.
Gwalia Ghost Town sits only a few kilometres away, with miners' cottages, rusting machinery, and the restored Hoover House above the old Sons of Gwalia mine. It is one of the better places in Western Australia to feel how quickly a mining town could rise, empty, and become history.
Leonora is not a soft destination. Come if you like outback roads, dry heat, gold-rush stories, and towns that have no interest in pretending they are resorts.
