The Mandurah canals are an extensive network of artificial waterways carved into the residential suburbs around Halls Head and Erskine. They first appeared in the 1970s, modelled on Florida and Queensland canal estates, and have grown into one of the largest such systems in the southern hemisphere. Most of the houses on the waterways have private jetties and small motor boats moored at the front door.
Visitors can experience the canals on a guided cruise from the foreshore, on a hired electric picnic boat, or just by walking and cycling the canal-side paths that the council has been gradually connecting. The Christmas-light displays in December are the showpiece event of the canal year.
